What is SCA and where does it apply?

What is SCA and where does it apply?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is payment security regulation brought forth by the European Banking Authority (EBA), to ensure that multi-factor authentication is performed for card payments. EBA has made it mandatory to implement SCA as a part of the Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) initiative. The amendment is effective from September 14, 2019.

SCA applies,

  • If you have a merchant account with a processor/acquirer from European Economic Area (EEA) and if you are collecting payments from cards issued in EEA &
  • If you are a merchant based out of Europe or have a significant customer base in Europe, then you should be prepared to handle SCA.

In order to comply with SCA, you'd have to incorporate 3DS authentication.
