Tax configuration for zip codes in US and tax jurisdiction on tax reports

Problem Statement

You need to configure taxes for different zip codes in the US, or tax reports are missing jurisdiction codes and names for some jurisdiction types.

Solution

US tax rates vary by state, city, and zip code. Chargebee supports configuring zip-based tax rates via CSV upload or via third-party providers such as Avalara and TaxJar. For CSV-based configuration, you can set tax rates for specific zip codes or zip code ranges in the US Sales tax CSV.

Steps to Set It Up

The US Sales tax CSV is available under Settings > Configure Chargebee > Taxes > United States. You can configure tax rates for state, city, and county, and associate them with zip codes or zip ranges.

Different rates for different zip codes: Add separate rows for each zip code when rates differ.

Same rate for a zip range: Enter the start zip in the zip code start column and the end zip in the zip code end column; leave the single zip_code column empty.

Additional Information

Tax jurisdiction on reports: Tax reports from Chargebee may not include jurisdiction code and name for some jurisdiction types (e.g., county). This can happen when using third-party providers (Avalara, TaxJar) because jurisdiction data comes from them and may be empty for certain types. Contact the provider's support team for help with missing jurisdiction data.
