Will a new plan price affect the existing subscriptions?

Problem Statement

Does Chargebee support grandfathering? If I change a plan's price, do existing subscriptions change? How do I change prices for current plans? How do I upgrade or downgrade a subscription?

Solution

When you update a plan price, the new price applies only to new subscriptions. Existing subscriptions keep the old price and renew at that rate. To change the price for existing subscriptions, use Edit Subscription (single) or the Update Subscription for Items bulk operation (multiple).

Note:

Price overriding must be enabled for these steps to work.

Steps to Set It Up

Single subscription

  1. Go to Subscriptions > open the subscription > Edit Subscription (Latest Product Catalog) or Change Subscription (Legacy Product Catalog)
  2. Enter the new price
  3. Choose Apply Changes (immediately or at next renewal)

Multiple subscriptions

Go to Settings > Import & Export Data > Choose a Bulk Operation > Subscriptions > Update Subscription for Items. See How to perform a bulk operation to override subscription price.

Note:

Price changes apply only to per-unit or flat-fee plans. For volume, tiered, and stair-step plans, you can change quantity but not the plan price.

Note:

Changing the plan removes coupons that do not apply to the new plan.

Latest Product Catalog: Subscription Index > Subscription details > Edit Subscription
